The Army of the Dead at the Stone of Erech

Watercolour on paper. One of a series inspired by Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". Painted in the 1980s, predating the film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Of the illustrators of Tolkien’s novels, and there have been several very good ones, my personal favourite is the late Pauline Baynes. I still have two of her illustrated maps from the 1970s. Her style makes me think of how the books would have looked if they’d been illustrated by Hobbits or Elves themselves. The tree roots on the left hand side of this painting were highlighted using a favourite technique, dampening the area and lifting off paint with a paper tissue to reveal some of the white paper beneath.
